Starting as a ground crew member straight out of high school in 1990, he spent the next decade working his way up to boom operator, learning every aspect of professional tree service from the ground up. Then came the storm of 2000. When severe weather tore through White Bear Lake, Mike grabbed his chainsaw and went to work — not for a paycheck, but for his neighbors. But even before trees, Mike was a serious rock climber — from the 1980s all the way to 2015, he tackled big climbs like Devil's Tower (twice!), Garden of the Gods, and Twin Owls out in Colorado. That love of climbing naturally carried into his tree work, and over time he shifted from rock walls to tree canopies before eventually settling into the boom — faster, easier, and still every bit as skilled. In 2000, when a severe storm struck White Bear Lake, he stepped up to help his community, building the reputation that led him to found A Cut Above Tree Service.
